weight discrimination.

Today let’s talk about an important social issue: overweight.

Overweight happens when people eat more calories than they burn off, and have extra body weight from muscle, bone, fat, and/or water.

The most useful measure of overweight and obesity is body mass index (BMI). BMI is based on height and weight and is used for adults, children, and teens. The universal formula used in medicine to calculate BMI is kg/m2. A BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is considered healthy; a BMI of 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight; and a BMI of 30 or more is considered obese.

There are many reasons explaining why today people become overweight. Someone may be gaining weight because of unhealthy food choices and family habits like eating fast food in front of the television… High-calorie, low-nutrient snacks and beverages, bigger portions of food, and less-active lifestyles are all contributing to the obesity epidemic.

You already know how hard it is for a person; who is overweight; to find a job. In our society everybody is caring about well looking and appearance matters in business. Unfortunately, when you’re overweight people make these kinds of assumptions about you; that you’re lazy and unhealthy. There is nothing to stop them acting on these prejudices and not hiring you because of your weight. You could be the best worker in the world, but just because you’re overweight you’re denied the opportunity of a job. Whenever if you are the most qualified for the job, and have the better experience, when you’re applying you’re probably not the only one; and employers are more likely to hire someone who is slim.

Don’t forget that the hardness to find a job is not the most important thing about being overweight. Be overweight means also risk of developing many health problems like diabetes; coronary heart disease and stroke; metabolic syndrome; certain types of cancer; sleep apnea; osteoarthritis; gallbladder disease; fatty liver disease; pregnancy complications;  Blount disease; asthma; Polycystic ovary syndrome (girls who are overweight may miss periods); depression...

Being overweight can also affect a person's joints, breathing, sleep, mood, and energy levels. So being overweight can impact a person's entire quality of life. In addition, you have to know that; for a person who is overweight; it’s harder to get a health insurance because insurers know that, this kind of person are more susceptible to be sick.

So you’ve understood that overweight is not easy for anybody and it’s dangerous. There are many simple ways to lose weight. You’re supposed to know that if you consume more than you use, you'll put on weight, every nutritionists can say you that. The best basic exercises are free and easy: walking, taking the stairs; you don’t need to spend money on a gym membership.

Losing weight and increasing the amount of physical activity are linked.

If you want to stay in good health, not having any problem with any health insurance and any employers (even if discrimination is forbidden, it’s happened…) be careful of what and how you eat.
